No Punt On Polo

AUSSIE actor Aden Young has managed to portray a polo player in his film The Bet, without actually participating in a single chukka.

Young lived in Merewether for a couple of years when he was a child, and his mum Jan now lives at Lake Macquarie.

His film The Bet, based on a young Sydney stockbroker (played by Matthew Newton) who makes a bet with his rich mate Angus (played by Young) about who can make the most money in three months with $50,000, opens at Showcase Cinemas in Newcastle tomorrow.

"I said I wanted to play [polo] but the film's insurance wouldn't allow me to. It's a very dangerous sport," Young said.

"I used to play ice hockey and I still play roller hockey, so I thought it would be fun."

Young, who is no stranger to playing nasty characters, says he is nothing like his character in the film.

"He was quite far removed from me. He was very manipulative and career-oriented. He was a lot of fun to play in that way," Young said.

Young was identified as hot property early in his career starring with the likes of Russell Crowe, but it is believed he shied away from roles that would earn him greater fame, instead opting for parts in smaller Australian films.

"No one can find a role that will instantly make them famous," he told The Word yesterday.

"The stories are the most important thing."

In the flick, Young also plays opposite former Newcastle lad Tim Richards.

"He was Will's [Newton's character] and my sidekick in the film. He's a fabulous young actor."

So does Young like a bet in real life?

"I didn't even have a punt on Melbourne Cup this year," he said.
